Virtual online school proposed for students

Students requiring summer school classes or residence instruction may well have the ability to sign in online for his or her courses. Throughout the education committee meeting from the Board of Education on Jan. 20, Fair Lawn High School Principal Jim Marcella and Vice Principal Matthew Cahn described how Educere, a virtual online school, offers courses to students.

"It is really a phenomenal opportunity," said Cahn. Marcella said the district continues to be searching at diverse virtual opportunities for a long time, but has discovered one that fits the school's needs. "We truly think we need to grasp this opportunity," said Marcella.

Cahn said Educere acts as a clearinghouse that meets students' individual requirements to provide the material for that course by way of its suppliers of content. "We are confident they're getting curriculum they would be obtaining in summer school," said Marcella.

A virtual instructor leads the courses having a personal learning coach obtainable to students from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The coach, who can be a teacher in the subject area, is offered through e-mail or on the phone to assist students. The coach also works together with guidance counsellors and students to accomplish the registration process. "The student is supported," said Cahn.

The price to parents for college students to earn summer school credits is the $195 Educere fee. There will likely be an administrative cost as well, added Marcella. Fair Lawn does not presently provide summer school in the district. Attending summer school at nearby schools can run between $300 and $600, based on Marcella.

Unlike other online programs, Marcella and Cahn noted Educere gives parents and administrators the chance to see what sort of student is progressing. By accessing a student's account, how typically she or he logs in and just how long he or she works throughout each session could be viewed.

"This is yet another aspect that people actually liked," said Marcella. To obtain a grade for that course, students will come to the high school for any test, said Cahn. The online instructor would then evaluate it. The on-line site also works best for students in need of home instruction. Students can take a complete course or just some from it for the time they'll be missing in class.

On this scenario the studying coach would contact the teachers to figure out exactly what are the student is working on in class after which offers the appropriate work to students. "It is customizable," said Cahn.
